All of Breaking Barriers' services are supported by the work of volunteers. There is a large range of needs in the various communities that we serve and hence a large array of opportunities for you to give the time that you have in a way that works for you.
Some of the various programs you can volunteer for are listed along the top panel. Click through them and look for something that sounds interesting and then give us a call to come in and check it out. If you can help in a way that's not listed here, we'd love to hear from you as well! You can also just call us to chat; we get lonely in that big office.
Think you might not have a lot of time available to commit to a volunteer program? Think again!
In this capacity, volunteers provide weekly grocery delivery to clients. This is done 2nd, 3rd & 4th Friday of each month. Many volunteers in this capacity only volunteer one time a month.
Food boxes are delivered between the hours of 1:00P.M.-7:00P.M.
(so you do have time to do this after work!!!)
Boxes are picked-up at the Breaking Barriers offices along with a mapped route for the volunteers to follow.
Driving is one of our most requested client services and a favorite job function of our volunteers. It entails providing the client with one-way and round trip transportation to or from doctors appointments, etc., using the volunteer's vehicle.
Transit Partner is best suited (but not necessarily limited) to the volunteer who can give an hour or two a week during business hours (9:00A.M. -5:00P.M. M-F).
Household Help or Yard Work are other ways you can volunteer to help assist clients for Breaking Barriers.
Clients are often too ill, tired or otherwise unable to do all of the usual household things that people are used to doing: vacuuming, dusting, cleaning the bathroom, dishes, laundry, lawn mowing, weed trimming, and sometimes even pet sitting.
We don't do anything too strenuous, like stripping or waxing the floor, or washing all the outside windows, or cleaning all the rugs with a rug beater (we will vacuum them of course).
Very rarely, a client will ask our help in cleaning an apartment after they have moved out. Depending on the level of need, and how much work is really required we can do this too.
This kind of work can also include helping clients move on occasion if you are interested in helping out with that sort of thing.
Working with the many communities that make up the rich fabric of Sacramento is one of the cornerstones of the work that we do. Community outreach can take many forms such as but not limited to:
SNAP recruits breast cancer survivors to become Navigator/Advocates for women recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
The Navigator/Advocates help transition these newly diagnosed women into appropriate treatment programs. They dialogue with newly diagnosed women and offer emotional support as well as answer questions about treatment options such as radiation, chemotherapy and clinical trials.
Since all the volunteers involved in this project are breast cancer survivors, they have a first hand understanding of what it's like to navigate the treatment system and are well informed on the variety of available treatment options. The women involved in this project range from long-term survivors to women who have only been out of treatment for a few months.
If you are interested in becoming a Navigator/Advocate, give us a call at 916-447-2437 or send us an email at clientservices@breakingbarriers-sacramento.org with your contact information.
